Primary 4O Tasks Friday 26 February 2021

Hello boys and girls. These are today’s tasks. I hope you are ready for the next episode of SpywatchπŸ‘

Literacy

In your learning packs you will find you workbook entitled New Wave English in practice. This is a new booklet which we will complete each day. It helps us to see how much we remember from our grammar work and our spelling work. I would like you to complete Day 5 of the booklet. Read the questions carefully making sure if you are asked to write an answer you write it in the box provided, if you’re asked to circle an answer you circle it, or if you are asked to tick a question, you tick it. Only do Day 5 today.

Today we will be watching our BBC Look and Learn literacy programme called Spywatch. So far, Luigi Balzoni, an Italian P.O.W. (Prisoner of War) arrives to help on the farm. Aunty Amy initially doesn't trust Luigi, but he soon wins her trust. Also, Miss Millington steals Mary's money and accuses Mary of stealing from her. Later, Mary writes a letter to her parents and gives it to Millington to post. However, Millington reads the letter in which Mary describes to her parents how horrible Grainger and Miss Millington are, how badly they're treating her, and begs them to come and get her. Millington throws the letter in the fire.   Your literacy tasks 5a can be found in your learning pack. You do not have to do Task 5b as shown on the timetable and in your learning pack.

So, Google YouTube and type in Spywatch and click on Episode 5: The Poster Comes to Life. Watch the programme carefully as it sets the scene for future episodes in the story.

Complete your task in your literacy books. 
Task 5a: Keep it in order. Cut out the story statements and put them in order. Decide how much time has passed between each event. Describe using phrases such as the same day,  the next day,  the next night, two days later.  Present your work as a time chart. Use the example given to help you set your work out. Put the story statements in order and check them, before you stick them in your book.

Once you have completed your Spywatch tasks, you have an opportunity to continue learning and testing yourself on your weekly spellings which you received on Monday. How have you got on? πŸ‘πŸ€™πŸ‘Ž

Numeracy

Complete Friday’s mental maths tasks for this week.

For this part of the term we are going to look at length. Length is a way of measuring things. By measuring things using length we can find out about the size of something. We can find out how big or small, how tall or short, how long or short, how deep or shallow, how long or wide, how high or low, how thick or thin, and how far or near something is. Length is a way of measuring that we can use everyday, in so many different ways. When do you think you would use length to measure something?   When we measure something we can often see straightaway the difference in length, height and distance between two or more things or places. For example, I am taller than each member of the class. The cloakroom is shorter than the classroom. The Spar is nearer to our school than Sainsbury’s.   So how do we measure length? But sometimes we need to be a little more certain or precise. There are two methods we could use.  First we can use things which are non-standard measures, such as steps, hand spans, fingers. This means the length can be different depending on who is measuring, For example, my step would be longer than yours. Compare your hand span with your mummy or daddy’s- are they the same? Secondly, we could use standard measures such as rulers, metre sticks or tape measures where the measurements are all even. For example, a metre stick is 1 metre or 100 centimetres long. Look at your ruler and see how it is divided up into equal sections. Compare it to another ruler the centimetre sections will be exactly the same.  

Before we do our task for today I would like you to watch a short video which will help you to understand about length and height and when to use different units for measuring. I would like you to complete Pages 1 and 2. You will need your ruler to help you with the task. Follow the instructions carefully. You need to remember that 1 metre = 100 centimetres. Don’t forget that 100 centimetres = 1 metre.

World Around Us

For this part of Term 2 we will be looking at Mammals. As we now know Mammals are one of the groups that form part of the Animal Kingdom. As we found out yesterday, there are other different types of animals which are divided into different groups that make up the Animal Kingdom; these are Birds, Fish, Reptiles, Amphibians and Insects. Each of these groups are different in some way when they are compared to each other.

Today we are going to look at the characteristics or reasons why an animal is said to be a mammal. I would like you to watch a short video on YouTube which is attached below. It explains some of the characteristics of a mammal and what makes them different to other types of animals and puts them into this particular group.

In your learning pack you will find your World Around Us worksheets. On the sheet titled, What is a Mammal? you will find the reasons or characteristics that make an animal a mammal. Using the information from the video and the information sheet, complete the worksheet called, The Characteristics of a Mammal. There is a word bank of words which will help you complete the characteristics. At the bottom of the page, I would like you to draw a mammal of your choice and tell me what it is.

Diary

I would like you to complete a diary entry for today. Remember to date your entry and answer the following questions:

How do I feel today? What did I like doing? What’s the weather like? What is happening in the world today?

For the last question you will have to listen to the news or ask an adult.
