Primary 4O Tasks for Friday 5 March 2021

Hello boys and girls. It is Friday and nearly the weekend and I am sure you are looking forward to having a rest. It  has been a busy week with lots going on for World Book Day, our Catch-up and P1, 2 and 3 teachers preparing for the return to school of classes on Monday! Hopefully it will not be long until we are back.

These are your tasks for today. Remember to upload your finished work so I can view it and give you some feedback. Have a lovely weekend, take care and stay safe.

Literacy

In your New Wave English in practice booklet complete Day 10 of the booklet. Read the questions carefully making sure if you are asked to write an answer you write it in the box provided, if you’re asked to circle an answer you circle it, or if you are asked to tick a question, you tick it. Only do Day 10 today.

Today we will be watching our BBC Look and Learn literacy programme called Spywatch. So far, Norman becomes homesick after receiving a letter from his mother. He goes for a walk by the river and meets Mike Johnson, a lieutenant from the nearby U.S. Army base who shows him how to fish. Meanwhile, Mary agrees to help Polly and Dennis find out if Grainger is a spy. On the way back to the Farm, Polly and Dennis encounter a strange woman who bears a striking resemblance to the woman in the poster Cyril Jenkins showed them. When the woman asks for directions to the village, Polly, convinced she's an enemy spy, intentionally sends her the wrong way and thinks they've seen the last of her - until she turns up at the front door!   Your literacy tasks 6a and 6b can be found in your learning pack.

So, Google YouTube and type in Spywatch and click on Episode 6: Bombs in the Country. Watch the programme carefully as it sets the scene for future episodes in the story.

Task 6a: Read all about it.

During World War Two, people used newspapers to tell people about important events and information. I have attached a newspaper page from Monday 9 September 1940 to show you how a newspaper article is set out. It is now time for you to become a reporter. Use the newspaper frame to write your own newspaper report on what has happened in this episode.

Task 6b: Adverb endings.

As we know an adverb describes a verb. For example, He sings loudly. Loudly is the adverb.  Most adverbs end in -ly. 

In Q. 1 you have to sort the adverbs from the adverb list into alphabetical order. Write your answers in the correct boxes.
In Q. 2 you have to write some sentences about Spywatch using adverbs. There is an answer already done for you.

Once you have completed your Spywatch task you have an opportunity to continue learning and testing yourself on your weekly spellings which you received on Monday. How have you got on?

Numeracy

For this part of the term we are going to look at length. Length is a way of measuring things. By measuring things we can find out about the size of something. We can find out how big or small, how tall or short how long or short, how deep or shallow, how long or wide, how high or low, how thick or thin, and how far or near something is. Length is a way of measuring that we can use everyday in so many different ways. When do you think you would use length to measure something? When we measure something we can often see straightaway the difference in length, height and distance between two or more things or places. For example, I am taller than each member of the class. The cloakroom is shorter than the classroom. The Spar is nearer to our school than Sainsbury’s.   So how do we measure length?   There are two methods.  First we can use things which are non-standard measures, such as steps, hand spans, fingers. This means the length can be different depending on who is measuring, For example, my step would be longer than yours. Compare your hand span with your mummy or daddy’s- are they the same? Secondly, we could use standard measures such as rulers, metre sticks or tape measures where the measurements are all even. For example, a metre stick is 1 metre or 100 centimetres long. Look at your ruler and see how it is divided up into equal sections. Compare it to another ruler the centimetre sections will be exactly the same.   Today we are going to look at standard measurements using a ruler. Your tasks can be found in your P4 Topic Maths Length book. In our first task (Measuring Up) we are going to measure some items we can find around our home. Before we actually measure the item, we are going to ESTIMATE how long it is. An estimate is another word for a guess or what we might think it will be. So first we estimate how long the item is and then using our ruler we measure how long it actually is.  In our second task (Draw and Measure Lines) we are going to draw and measure lines using a ruler. Draw each of the lines in the boxes provided, for example, a 2 cm line. Then I would like you to find out using the Internet, the answers to the four questions. World Around Us 

We have been looking at Mammals and where they live (habitat) in the world. Today we are going to focus on the Mammals that live in or are native to Ireland. We live on an island, have a particular climate, have certain types of animals and grow only certain types of plants which means only certain types of Mammals can live here. We often find different types of Mammals have been introduced to Ireland over time, but these are not considered as being truly native to Ireland.    As is unfortunate throughout the world, many species of Mammals are no longer present in Ireland or have become extinct, such as wolves and bears. We will be looking later on in our topic at endangered and extinct species of Mammals.   I would like you to watch the attached YouTube video on the Mammals of Ireland. As you can see we do not have many species of native Mammals. Each of the Mammals are named and under their name is the Latin zoological name which scientists use when they are classifying or putting them into their particular groups.  As you can see the Mammals live on land, rivers, air and the seas around Ireland.  Some of these you may have seen or see some of them if you are lucky when you are out and about.   I would now like you to watch a short second video on the Irish Hare. I have seen some of these hares on my uncle’s farm and at Belfast International Airport!! In your project books under the title, The Irish Hare, I would like you to write 5 interesting facts about the hare. Listen carefully to the video and watch out for fun facts. So hop to it!!😉

Diary

I would like you to complete a diary entry for today. Remember to date your entry and answer the following questions:
