Dust off those bikes and scooters and let's put our best foot forward, the Sustrans Big walk and wheel is back!
Get those helmets and your wheels/feet ready and prepare to get competitive as we are once again participating in the Sustran's Big walk and wheel competition. This is a UK wide active travelling competition whereby all children are encouraged to walk, scoot or cycle to school for a one week period and compete against other schools to gain leaderboard status and coveted prizes. We are very fortunate to have a fantastic school community who have always embraced this experience and the results have proven this having previously achieved third place in the UK and second place in Northern Ireland. 😊 Please remember that if you do live further away from school you can park a little bit down the road and the journey will still be counted so long as the children are travelling a 10 minute duration.
This year we are taking part in the 16th Walk and wheel from Monday 24th - Friday 28th March. Alongside encouraging our pupils to actively travel to and from school we will also be hosting our annual 'scoot/cycle the circle' activity whereby whole classes are asked to bring their bike or scooter and helmet on specific days. This year these days are:
Monday 24th March - Nursery, P1B, P1F, P2H, P2/3H.
Tuesday 25th March - P3H, P4C and P4M.
Wednesday 26th March - P5O, P5/6F, P6O and P7Y.
Please note that no electric scooters are allowed and also please ensure that your child parks their scooter or bike properly outside their classroom window or if in KS2 in the bike shed and along the wall opposite. Please ensure they do not leave any trip hazards and we would also encourage pupils to wear high visibility clothing and helmets where possible.
On Friday 28th March we will also be holding our annual walk to school morning from Ballymena North. This is always a lovely event whereby we as a school community all meet at Ballymena North and walk together to school. This year we are asking pupils and families to meet us at 8.30 am at Ballymena North and we will be leaving there kindly escorted by PSNI to walk to school promptly at 8:40 am. Please note this is a walking only event and all children regardless of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Thankyou for always supporting us so well during our Sustrans events. This is a great opportunity for your child/children to have fun, get into the competitive spirit and get fit whilst also helping the environment so get set and let's get moving up that leaderboard.
Kind regards and best wishes Mrs Horan (active travel coordinator).
