British Science Week

14th Mar 2023

Primary 3/4O carried out a number of experiments for Science Week.

We looked at how to create static electricity by rubbing our hands together. By doing this we were able to move and even pick up small pieces of tissue paper.

We also looked at solubility and density by creating floating worms or snakes using a plate, dry wipe marker and water. The worms or snakes began to float!!! This was because the dry wipe marker ink does not dissolve in water and the ink is less dense than water so it floats. When the plate was tilted the worm or snake moved!

We also looked at a process called capillary action. We used two glasses, water, paper towels and food colouring. The paper towel is made from fibers and the coloured water is able to travel through the gaps in the fibers. The gaps in the paper towel act like capillary tubes and pull the water upward. This is what helps water climb from a plant’s roots to the leaves at the top of the plant or tree. We will look at this again in our Plants topic.

During P.E. we looked at the effect of exercise on our bodies in particular our breathing and heart rate.

Science is everywhere and can be so much fun.
